Te new £24.7m Westminster Lodge leisure centre in St Albans, Hertfordshire has been officially opened to the public. Te facility, operated by Everyone Active in part- nership with St Albans City and District Council, already has 4,400 members, 14,000 Everyone Active card hold- ers and 1,055 children signed up for swimming lessons. The centre, designed by


S&P Architects, includes a 176-station fitness suite, boasting X Cube, Total Gym, Trixter bikes, Power Plate, Wattbike and Precor equipment and sepa- rate youth gym. There is also a 25m, 10-lane swimming

The Lightbox gallery given PM’s Big Society Award


Te Lightbox, a museum and gallery set up and run by a group of volunteers, has been given the Prime Minister’s Big Society Award. Located in Woking, Surrey, the £7m attrac-


tion is staffed by more than 150 volunteers and runs an education and outreach service

Hastings pier wins £11.4m lottery grant


Te next chapter in the story of Hastings Pier – which was gutted by fire in 2010 – is underway, following the news of a successful Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant. Te £11.4m HLF grant will provide the lion’s


share of the £13.9m redevelopment costs. Plans drawn up by architects deRijke Marsh


Morgan (dRMM), include a traditional seaside promenade, farmers’ markets, open air cinema, restaurant, bistro, bar, theatre, fairs and fetes. According to the chief executive of Hastings Pier and White Rock Trust, Simon Opie, it will be “a reinvention of Victorian tradition and a new source of pride for the town.” dRMM say they want the pier to remember
