Remember Your Senior Prom? Photographer Mary Ellen Mark’s “Prom” opens at PMA

ary Ellen Mark, a Phila- delphia native, has been called the foremost fe-
male photographer today, and her degrees, her solo and groups shows, her books, her awards, her honorary doctorates, and the breadth of her work during the past 40 years are a mighty testa- ment to her accomplishments. Known for her portraiture and for her unfl inching eye in uncomfort- able zones, this time Mark has set herself the challenge of looking at the quintessential American coming-of-age ritual – the senior prom. In the service of her goal, she chose thirteen high schools in ten cities across the United States and across ethnic and economic boundaries to produce “Prom: Photographs by Mary Ellen Mark,” a collection of 127 photographs, 41 of which are on display at the PMA’s Perelman Building, since July 1st. memories for those who attended – and those who did not. He re- members his own senior prom and particularly the color of his tuxedo. “I won’t tell you what it was because it would curl your hair.” Rub would rather you see how nicely the PMA photography collection is shaping up. This is Mary Ellen Mark’s sec- ond exhibition at the Museum. Here, she has used a 20x24 Po- laroid Land Camera to produce the 20x24 portraits on instant fi lm. The camera is daunting by any measure. It’s 6 feet tall and weighs in at 240 pounds. Know that there are only fi ve of them left in the entire world, and that the 20x24 Studio is currently research- ing ways to keep the technology alive. The camera could be fl own to the locations for the shoots, but the fi lm had chemicals that reacted at high altitudes. During the years of the project, from 2006 to 2009, Mark had three qualifi ed technicians who knew how to operate the camera, and who had the skills to move it and manipu- late the bellows for changes in
