SUSAN MCIVER SUSAN MCIVER
Sal D'Angelo owner of D'Angelo Estate Winery on the Naramata Bench, opened his B & B three years before his winery in order to provide a source of income while the vines matured.
Okanagan Lake. A separate wing of the Smits’ house
was designed to serve as a three- bedroom B&B. The Smits also have a two bedroom walk-out site in the basement which they rent on a weekly basis. Before opening Sonoran Estate Winery in August 2004, the Smits grew flowers between the rows of young vines. They trucked the flowers to the Lower Mainland, where they sold them to help provide an income until the winery was in operation. They subsequently purchased eight
acres on Gartrell Road in Summerland and built a large wine-producing facility, a tasting room and the Full Moon Bistro. The relocated Sonoran Winery had
its grand opening in August 2008. Through all the changes, the Smits continued to live in their original home and to operate the B & B. Over the years, they have welcomed
guests from around the world. Some of them have become local landowners themselves. These include an Israeli couple who
now own and operate Silkscarf Winery in Summerland and a Canadian couple who started Apples and Quail B & B, also in Summerland.
Until 2011 when Bonitas Winery opened its loft suite, Sonoran was the only winery in Summerland to have on-site accommodations. In 2001, Sal D’Angelo purchased 27
acres with a large house, a cottage and 285 feet of water front on the Naramata Bench.
Ada Smits (above) and husband Arjan, owners of Sonoran Estate Winery in Summerland, have operated the Windmill Bed and Breakfast in a specially designed wing of their home since 2000.
D’Angelo renovated the house to include three separate self-contained suites that range in size from a small bachelor unit to a 1,200 square-foot suite with a balcony that stretches the length of the house and overlooks the vineyard and Okanagan Lake.
