40pc of cancers ‘can be prevented’
A new study by Cancer Research has revealed that around 40 per cent of cancers in women and 45 per cent of those in men could be pre- vented by adopting healthier lifestyles. In total, the charity estimates that around
134,000 people in the UK could avoid cancer by adjusting their lifestyles in exercising more, as well as quitting smoking, cutting down on alcohol and improving their diets. According to the report, which was pub-
lished in the December 2011 issue of British Journal of Cancer, smoking has been found to be the most important lifestyle factor causing 23 per cent of cancers in men and 15.6 per cent in women – nearly one in five of all cancers.
