2009 – Full Steam Ahead by David B. Walls, CAE, CMP
Welcome to 2009! As you read this
article more than half the Association’s fiscal year is behind us, and plans for the 2009-2010 fiscal year will be well on the way. So far this year, the Association has
changed its name, conducted a board retreat, updated the website, launched the Week Ahead, Appellate Update and E-ssentials communiqués, hosted more than a dozen CLE programs and events, and held its first Justice Day in Annapo- lis. All this and more have been done without increasing membership dues and without decreasing membership benefits. We understand in the midst of current
economic times most are tightening the purse strings. While times are tough in today’s economy, remember we are stronger as a community. Now is the time to be more involved in an organiza- tion that can actually help you through these times. You should be asking your- self: “Am I using my MAJ benefits to their maximum value?” Turn to page 46 where you will find
a list of your benefits. Each is designed to help you achieve maximum return on your investment through the MAJ community. You can get involved in the MAJ
community by utilizing your skills and talents as leaders to move the organiza- tion forward. Start by volunteering for a committee. As member of a commit- tee, your talents can not only help you navigate your professional path, but also the path of the Association. We are look- ing for motivated members with strong leadership skills and talents to serve the membership. Most committees meet via conference calls to minimize time away from office, and assignments are divided to share the workload. Contact Kevin Goldberg, President-Elect, at (301) 589-2999 and ask how he can best use

your talents. You can also utilize your experiences
to serve as a guide to young members. MAJ is looking to match mentors and mentees so that the next generation of leaders is focused on the needs of the profession and the MAJ community. To serve as a mentor or if you are an attorney in search of a mentor, contact Elizabeth Jesukiewicz Frey (commit- tee chair) at
efrye@medicalneg.com or James L. Otway (vice-chair) at jotway@
otwayrusson.com. What about using one of MAJ’s newest
electronic communications, E-ssentials? Launched in January, this bulletin will be sent every-other-month and con-
tains two very important components, Verdicts & Settlements and Hearings & Rulings. It also contains other links and resources that will help you help your clients. If you missed the January launch, visit the MAJ website at www.
marylandassociationforjustice.com. The information is listed under “My MAJ” under the “Publications” heading. Did you know you can access many
of your membership benefits by log- ging onto the website? What about the listserv? Did you know you will be con- nected with the wisdom and resources of hundreds of your colleagues? Are you
