Dr. Ruffin’s technical contributions provide revolutionary methods to reduce the size and cost of weapon components and enhance reliability. In 2003, he was promoted to the highest rank a scientist could ever achieve in government service. His latest patent disclosure revealed a noninvasive technique for treating cancer patients. Dr. Ruffin became the first African American to receive advanced degrees in physics from any school of higher learning in the state of Alabama when he received a master’s degree in physics in 1982 and a Ph.D. in physics four years later from the University of Alabama.

Alankar Gupta has dedicated his life to aviation safety. He has been a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical En- gineers for two decades, served as chairman of the Society of Automotive Engineers’ AC-9 Environmental Control Systems Committee, and taught SAE courses on design of pneumat- ics and air conditioning systems for commercial and military transport planes to practicing engineers from all over the world. Mr. Gupta has represented Boeing on the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, the Society of Automotive Engineers, and Federal Aviation Admin- istration technical committees. He has been granted 10 U.S. patents and has three pending.

SHARON MONICA JONES, PH.D. Research Aerospace Engineer, NASA Langley Research Center


Dr. Sharon Monica Jones is an expert in robot vision and aviation systems analysis. Her research looks at data from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board to determine the probability of a particu- lar accident happening in the future. In 2010, she led a multicenter assessment of the Aviation Safety Program. The three- month study produced information that helped reshape the program’s governance structure and research portfolio. Dr. Jones first came to the NASA center as a math graduate from Hampton University. Her 10-week Langley Research Center Sum- mer Scholar assignment was in computer vision algorithms.


Technical Innovation


LASHON BOOKER, PH.D. Senior Principal Artificial Intelligence Engineer, MITRE Corporation Dr. Booker is a leading expert in artificial intelligence. Since he joined MITRE in 1990, he has been engaged in various R&D areas such as malware classification, network intrusion detec- tion, network analysis, data and text mining, modeling behav- iors for command forces, and enabling better decision making in training systems. Over the last decade, he has focused on cyber security, one of the most complex problems that America faces. He is currently working on the identification of potential intrusions in computer systems through forensics detection and computational modeling of social networks in play to determine where and when a threat may occur; in addition, he has worked with the IRS and FAA. Dr. Booker provides mentoring as early- career professionals conduct their research. 

Dr. Jin is a cereal rust expert. Wheat rusts are something like flu strains for humans; just as a virulent Spanish flu strain appeared to threaten humans, over 80 percent of the world’s wheat supply is at risk to Ug99. When this new strain was confirmed in Uganda in 1999, Nobel Prize winner Norman Borlaug and the Inter- national Maize and Wheat Improvement Center looked to Dr. Yue Jin to assess the mutant. His work is changing cereal crop breeding and serving as a basis for international food security. New wheat varieties with the first resistance are being developed by research centers through the world.
