Lucky Numbers: 16, 23, 35 This is a repeat of an ar-
ticle I wrote a while back. Did you know that all States
have official songs? State songs from Kentucky, Maryland, Vir- ginia, Florida, Georgia, Texas, for example, have some very interesting views about Black people.
You had such songs as “My
Old Kentucky Home,” the of- ficial state song in 1853. Sur- prisingly, the original title was “Poor Uncle Tom, Goodnight.” It became one of Stephen Foster’s best loved ministrel songs. The lyrics were very ra- cial, such as “The time will come when Darkies have to part.” Many of these songs are still being played at today’s Kentucky Derby.
There will always be some
form of racism. My tour of duty as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne in the early 1960s was a wake-up call. It was tough and when I joined the Detroit Police Department in 1969, I learned that if you are a good person, color has nothing to do with it. I have friends of all colors. How- ever, the real color is their hearts, their souls and their talent as musicians.
I would like to introduce
you to this week’s “Memory Train” passenger, Ivan Stew- ard, Jr.
He was born in Plaquemine,
Louisiana, and demonstrated artistic and creative abilities at an early age. As an African- American youngster growing up in the South, art supplies came only in the form of house paint, wooden boards and mud. Due to the lack of expo- sure to other Black artists or any influence from Black art, Ivan pursued an education in Industrial Art.
Public information meeting to inform residents of runway project A public information meet-
ing will be held in Romulus on Sept.14 to inform residents of a runway rehabilitation proj- ect scheduled to occur in 2012 and 2013 at Detroit Metropoli- tan Wayne County Airport (DTW).
“While it is not required,
the Wayne County Airport Au- thority has chosen to conduct this session in the interest of openly sharing information with all of our stakeholders,” said Airport Authority Interim CEO Genelle Allen.
The open-house-style meet-
ing will be held at the Detroit Metro Airport Marriott, 30559 Flynn Drive. Citizens can stop in anytime between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Runway 4R-22L was first in-
stalled at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in 1950 and its cur- rent pavement is more than 30 years old. The 12,000-foot runway primarily used for de- partures will not be extended or moved, but reconstructed in its current location.
The project is not expected
to create significant air traf- fic delays and is estimated to create approximately 345 tem- porary construction jobs.

Ivan attended Southern Uni-
versity in Baton Rouge, Louisi- ana. After graduating in 1968, he became an industrial arts teacher in the Detroit public school system. His students have won many regional and state awards in metal craft, wood sculpturing, drafting and furniture building.
His art career, until the late
1980s was mostly centered around painting his family and other subjects of general interest.
I have known Ivan for many Hugh Burrell
years and been familiar with his artistic ability to record events of history with his paint brush, history was left out of books. Such as the 9th and 10th Cavalry regiments, better
