Hotels and Guest Accommodation
Classifications
Visitors often ask us what the difference is between Hotels and Guest Accommodation.
Hotels
Hotels in Great Yarmouth range from 2★ to 4★ and come in all shapes and sizes.
Hotels have to be licensed and offer dinner at least five nights a week, have all rooms en-suite or with private bathrooms
and have to provide certain additional facilities and services at the higher grades to include:
★★ Dinner available every night of the week
★★★ All bedrooms en-suite, room service and permanently staffed reception available.
★★★★ 50% of all en-suites have bath and shower, 24 hour room service and some permanent luxury suites.
Guest Accommodation
Guest accommodation tends to be personally run by resident proprietors and ranges from period houses to larger
establishments, categorised as Guest Accommodation, Bed & Breakfast or Guest House. Some may have just two or three
rooms available to let, others may have more bedrooms with quality ranging from simple to luxurious. Some properties may be
licensed and also offer evening meals.
Higher grades are awarded for additional facilities such as:
★★★ Bathroom / shower cannot be shared with the owners.
If the bedroom does not have an en-suite, there must be a washbasin in the bedroom.
★★★★ At least 50% of bedrooms are en-suite or have a private bathroom
For both hotels and guest accommodation, it may be that exceptional bedrooms, bathrooms and customer service are on offer,
but that the establishment cannot physically achieve a higher grading perhaps because it does not have the minimum number
of bedrooms with both bath and shower, or because it is a period property and cannot install en-suite bedrooms or washbasins
in the bedrooms or maybe because it does not offer room service or 24 hour reception, for example.
The symbols on fold out page 41 will tell you what facilities the properties you are looking at have to offer.
