Mid-morning Milk - Why It's the White Stuff for Children G

eneral practitioner, presenter and writer on medical issues, Dr Hilary Jones is a firm

advocate of the health benefits of drinking milk for children at nursery and primary school. Here he explains why drinking milk at mid-morning break improves learning and mental performance. "I personally benefitted from school milk as a

child, and as a doctor I’d like to see thousands more children benefitting from the same opportunities today.

As parents or teachers we all feel passionate

about the health and education of our children. Each is dependent on the other and that is why I think one of the minimum requirements for a good start to the school day is a decent breakfast to fuel the mind and body and ignite children from inside metabolically as well as cerebrally. That way, they will be ready for their daily diet of inspiration and learning in the classroom. Sadly, 21% of children arriving at school

today have had no breakfast whatsoever and are hungry. Research confirms that if children attend school on an empty stomach, it has a negative impact on their ability to concentrate, to socialise happily with their peers and maximise their educational and physical potential. Which is why a simple carton of milk shared with their friends at mid-morning break time provides an excellent opportunity to address much of this need. Milk is the nearest thing to complete nutrition in a drink. It is a great mental and physical energy booster, it rehydrates after playground activities and because it contains so many essential ingredients such as calcium, vitamin B12 and protein, this extra portion of milk is a once-in- a-lifetime opportunity to help build strong teeth and bones as well as vital immunity. All children whether well-nourished or not

can benefit from mid-morning milk and the best way to facilitate this is through Cool Milk. Winners of “LACA Outstanding Supplier of the Year 2015”, Cool Milk can provide free milk for under 5’s and subsidised milk for all other children in school."
