Bucks New Uni welcomes new VC

Buckinghamshire New University has welcomed its new Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Rebecca Bunting. Prof Bunting takes over the University's

leadership from Prof Ruth Farwell CBE who retired at the end of January. She joins Bucks from the University of Portsmouth where she was Deputy Vice-Chancellor. Prof Bunting said on her first day in the

new role: “My first task will be to meet the University's staff, students and external colleagues, and from there I can begin to consider the University’s priorities for the coming years.” As a member of the Higher Education

Funding Council for England's (HEFCE) Widening Participation and Student Opportunity Commitee, and Chair of HEFCE’s Widening Participation Review Group, Prof Bunting shares the values of the University and has a firm commitment to social equality and diversity. Prof Bunting graduated from the

University of Cambridge with an English degree and started her career teaching in London comprehensive schools, transferring to higher education as a senior lecturer at the University of Roehampton.

Professor Shân Wareing has joined London South Bank University (LSBU) as Pro Vice-Chancellor with overall

responsibility for student experience and education. Professor Wareing joins LSBU

from Buckinghamshire New University where she has been Pro Vice-Chancellor Learning and Teaching since November 2012, with a portfolio for covering issues that will be core to her brief at LSBU including Learning and Teaching, Student Services, and Curriculum Quality. lead on the development of the University’s innovative learning pathway which focuses on the use of blended learning and skills- based curricula to develop students employability and aspiration.

CBE for Huddersfield Vice- Chancellor

Prof Bob Cryan, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Huddersfield, has proudly received his CBE from Buckingham Palace. However, he says that the award

is not purely a personal honour, but a tribute to all staff who have helped to raise the University’s reputation in recent years. His CBE was announced as one of the

Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2014, and the award was made for Professor Cryan’s services to higher education. In 2013, Professor Cryan was voted

'Inspiring Leader of the Year' at the Guardian University Awards. He is also a Deputy Lieutenant for West Yorkshire and a Board Member of the Leeds City Region Local Enterprise Partnership.

Sydney University takes low carbon lead

The University of Sydney has announced it will substantially reduce the carbon footprint of its listed share portfolio over the next three years. In a first for Australian universities, by

seting a reduction target of 20% relative to the footprint of its current listed equity composite benchmark, the University is visibly demonstrating its commitment to addressing climate change. The decision follows a comprehensive

review taking into account leading practice on sensitive investments, and the current global views and actions surrounding fossil fuel investments. The review considered a number of

options, including whether to divest entirely from the fossil fuels industry. It also highlighted the complexities of reducing an investment portfolio's carbon footprint. For example, divesting entirely from all companies with an interest in fossil fuels could result in divesting from companies that are also commited to building renewable energy sources. In an innovative step, the University

Prof Rebecca Bunting

Prof Shân Wareing

Prof Bob Cryan

will ask its listed equity fund managers to build a portfolio of investments that enables the University to reduce its carbon footprint by 20% – in just three years. The University will measure and publicly report progress towards this goal annually.
