S

UNNY SAN DIEGO, California welcomed the 2014 Annual Meeting of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery last November. President Mitchel

P. Goldman, whose world-class group practice is located in San Diego, hosted the event. The Manchester Grand Hyatt has been one of the most popular venues in recent years, and the perfect weather kept spirits high. Kathy Ireland, Sports Illustrated cover girl

and global entrepreneur made every teenage boy’s dreams come true as the keynote speaker. She gave an inspirational talk to kick off the meeting’s festivities.

Meeting highlights According to Dr. Goldman, 'This year's meeting under the direction of Drs. Kim Butterwick and Hayes Gladstone was one of the best ever. There were a number of highlights,

including residents

participated in multiple new sessions; I particularly enjoyed and was impressed by the session on innovative studies and case reports. In addition, the live patient demonstrations were well attended and the expert video production allowed the audience to be part of the procedure.' The most significant research and

advanced techniques in cosmetic, medical, reconstructive and Mohs procedures were presented. Three concurrent tracks with over 65 scientific sessions and hands-on workshops and demonstrations gave registrants a lot to choose from. The faculty presented their personal experience and offered many pearls for them to take back to their practices. The sessions were designed to foster interactions with the speakers, and to learn about treatments and products in the FDA pipeline. The exhibit hall was buzzing with over

25 new companies as first time exhibitors in attendance. According to Ramin Eghbali, Vice President Marketing, Refinity, at Cosmederm Bioscience, 'We were delighted to participate and showcase our new technology at this year’s ASDS. The ASDS has become an excellent platform for education, awareness and the exchange of clinical ideas attended by some of the top dermatologists in the world. We very much enjoyed the Women’s Dermatologic Society luncheon and are looking forward to next year’s event.'

ASDS Awards As always, the ASDS leadership honored a short list of exemplary members for their contributions, along with grants for clinical research Melanie Palm, MD, MBA, was honored

for her numerous contributions with the ASDS Award for Outstanding Service. The annual award recognizes young, emerging leaders of ASDS who have demonstrated commitment to the Society’s growth and success. Palm is director and owner of Art of Skin MD, in Solana Beach, CA. Eight ASDS members were honored

with the President’s Award, which recognizes those who have contributed to the specialty and/or ASDS in an extraordinary or unique way. Dr. Goldman

presented the awards to an international roster of dermatologic surgeons.

New technologies and products Among the products that generated buzz, Kythera Biopharmaceuticals presented a workshop on submental fat reduction. The company’s ATX-101 is currently in late stage clinical trials in the US. Picosecond lasers were a hot topic, as there are now three FDA cleared systems; Cynosure’s PicoSure®, Cutera’s enlighten™, and Syneron-Candela’s new PicoWay Dual- Wavelength laser. There was also much discussion about the launch of Galderma’s Restylane® Silk, the first filler to gain FDA clearance for the lip indication.

Girl power For the first time, a marketing panel was on the program. 'The simulcast of the ASDS Course: Mini-MBA 1 and 2 was very well received. Physicians typically do not get training or are educated in the business aspect of medicine. The course covered HIPAA, fraud and embezzlement, marketing, and contracts,' said Washington DC dermatologist Cheryl Burgess. Dr. Ava Shamban of Santa Monica, CA also shared her thoughts on branding your practice with social media, and the importance of speaking to your audience so they get to know you even before coming to your office. Dermatologist Sabrina Fabi from San

Diego spoke at the resident symposium about the importance of establishing the 'why' when starting in practice. 'As anyone can push filler into someone's face, or fire a laser, but the "why" behind why one does it, is what separates them from everyone else,' she said. 'One of the highlights was the mega- combinations session that Jean Carruthers
