People offered mummies like this to the crocodile god Sobek.

Gods on Earth I love finding pet mummies like Hapi-Puppy.

T ey help us understand a people who lived long ago. It makes them seem more like us. It is like, “Some had pets just like I do!” Most of the animal mummies were not pets,

though. A bull with special markings is a good example. Ancient Egyptians believed this bull was a god in its earthly form. It was treated like a king. Its keepers fed it the best grasses and grains. T ey brushed it and dressed it in jewels. Its aſt erlife was just as rich. I have seen bull

mummies wrapped in fine linens, wearing masks painted with gold. T is evidence shows us how important these special bulls were to the ancient Egyptians. Bull mummies like these are rare. We have

found many other kinds of animal mummies, though, including baboons, cats, and falcons. Each of these animals represented a god. T e ancient Egyptians believed these mummies carried prayers to the gods, so millions of them were off ered up as giſt s. I am finding many ibis mummies on my

recent digs. T ese wading birds represented the god of writing and knowledge. I guess a lot of ancient Egyptians prayed for wisdom.
