Aug. 16 • Huck Finn Fishing Derby, Huntington Beach. The 51st annual Huck Finn Fishing Derby will be held at the Huntington Beach Pier. Open to children between the ages of 4-15. Cal Boating will provide loaner rods and bait, California Fishing Passports, passport stamps and California Finfish and Shellfish Identification books. Aug. 16 • Tuna Harbor Dockside Market, San Diego. Each Saturday local fisherman will have fresh catches for sale near Seaport Village. The venue will have three vendors selling seafood from 8 a.m.- 1 p.m. Selection includes a wide-variety of seasonal fish, including yellowtail, tuna, mahi and lobster, as well as stable options like sea urchin and live crabs. Aug. 16 • Fish for Life! Dana Point. Fish for Life! is a nonprofit organization with a charter to enhance the lives of special needs individuals by inviting them out on the water to enjoy a com- plimentary half-day of deep sea fishing. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s California Fishing Passport Program will join them aboard the Dana Pride out of Dana Wharf Sportfishing, equipped with California Fishing Passports for everyone and stamps for each fish caught. Aug. 22-24 • Cabo/Hatteras/Viking Challenge, Newport Beach. Stan Miller Yachts invites all Cabo, Hatteras, and Viking Yacht owners to the 12th annual owner’s tournament at Basin Marine. Participants will compete in the large tuna/albacore, dorado, yellowtail, sea base and release marlin categories. Boats will spread throughout the Southern California coastline and into Mexican waters. Check-in/registration for the three-day event will also be held at Stan Miller’s San Diego office, with food and drinks available. Aug. 23 • Newport Harbor Bay Bass Open, Newport Beach. Hosted by the Balboa Angling Club, the event has an entry fee of $60, which covers a maximum of three anglers. Catches are restricted to spotted bay bass only with a mini- mum of 13 inches. Other guidelines include using lures only, no live or dead bait and no trolling. There are also no line test requirements. The event runs from 5 a.m.- 1p.m. An award cere- mony follows at 4 p.m. at the BAC dock. Aug. 23 • IGFA/UPSAC Junior Angler Series: Avila Pier Kids Derby. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s California Fishing Passport program joins the International Game Fish Association and the United Pier & Shore Anglers of California for their Young Angler Tournament series event. Youth from throughout the area will attend. The program gives each participant a California Fishing Passport, a California Finfish and Shellfish Identification book and stamps for each of the different species caught. Trophies are awarded to


the winning anglers in each age group. A free hot dog lunch, raffle prizes and goodie bags will be handed out. Fishing will run from 10:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. Open to all kids ages 6-15. For more details, call (831) 649-7191, email, or visit dfg.ca.gov/fishingpassport/.


Sept. 6 • Free fishing day, San Pedro. If you are new to the sport of fishing, the Department of Fish and Game offers a free day of fishing, one of two days within the year where anglers can fish without a sport fishing license. Free fishing days provide a low- cost way to give fishing a try. Fishing in the City and free fish- ing day clinics are designed to educate novice anglers about fishing ethics, fish habits, effective methods for catching fish and fishing tackle. Ever angler must have the appropriate report card

Sept. 12-13 • Master Angler Billfish Tournament and the IGFA Great Marlin Race, Newport Beach. The 33rd annual tournament welcomes all fishing clubs to participate in the oldest all-release marlin tournament on the west coast. Also included is the Great Marlin Race, where teams purchase and deploy satellite tags to track their marlin for 18 days. The $175 per angler entry fee includes the kick-off party and captain’s meeting at 5 p.m., Sept. 10 at the Tee Room, located on Irvine Ave. at the Newport Golf Course. An awards ceremony, banquet and raffle will be held at the Balboa Yacht Club at 5 p.m., Sept. 14. Nov. 18-21 • Los Cabos Charter Boat Classic, Los Cabos, Mexico. Known for participants reel- ing in world record-sized tuna, wahoo, dorado and marlin, the Los Cabos Big Charter Boat Classic is a highly unique tournament. Entry is free to anyone fishing on a Los Cabos Charter boat. Total cash prizes are guaranteed at $40,000. Anglers can enter to fish any or all of the fishing days with $10,000 up for grabs each day.
