[COACHING]
WHY DO I NEED LIABILITY INSURANCE?
As a certified weightlifting coach or trainer,
you appreciate the importance of technique. Every day, you emphasize to your clients the need for proper technique in order to achieve specific athletic results. Along these lines, you should also consider
and understand what is at risk. Your liveli- hood is on the line.
It only takes a single
lawsuit or claim to bankrupt you. We live in a litigious society. You are a professional with specialized training and certification. Though you may not be ultimately responsi-

ble for an injury or damages, your role makes you a target. Even baseless claims require you to defend yourself. Legal defense can be costly. Examples of claims we have seen in the sports training industry include: • A client was injured when the weight level was increased and caused severe strain and bodily injury.
• A coach damaged a mirror in the facility causing approximately $1,000 in damages.
• A client alleged that his trainer was negli- gent in not inspecting the equipment be- fore use and he was injured when a cable failed and fell on his head.
A little insurance knowledge can empower
you as a consumer and give you piece of mind that you have solutions that respond to your risk. USA Weightlifting offers liability coverage with two important components: • General Liability insurance is designed to respond to claims brought by third parties (clients, facility owners and other invited guests) alleging bodily
injury, property
damage, and personal or advertising in- jury in connection with covered activities (in your case, client-training activities).
• Professional Liability insurance is de- signed to protect professionals from claims arising from errors or omissions in the performance of their profession- al services (in your case, weightlifting training services).
