seventh annual Philly Beer Week (phillybeerweek. org) from May 30 to June 8). On the agenda will be hundreds of festivals, dinners, tours, pub crawls, tastings and meet-the-brewer nights throughout the greater Philadelphia area. Operators: Virgin Holidays has re-introduced Philadelphia to its US programme for 2014. The three hotels featured in its programme are Hamp- ton Inn Philadelphia City Center, Hotel Monaco Philadelphia and the Loews Philadelphia.


ATLANTIC CITY


It may be in a different state (New Jersey) but like Philadelphia, Atlantic City has also taken great strides in recent years to reinvent itself. Just


60 miles east of Philadelphia and once mainly a getaway for East Coast-based Americans looking for an inexpensive weekend casino package, the city has broadened its horizons and is now very much geared up to welcoming international visitors. It’s true that the majority of its tourists are still domestic, but there’s more than enough in the city to lure Brits across the Atlantic. UK visitors who are fans of the hit TV show Boardwalk Empire will recognise some of the backdrops seen in the series about the Prohibition Era, particularly the four-mile-long boardwalk that is the most iconic attraction of America’s oldest seaside resort. Prohibition-era tours that visit many of the sites in the series are available. Stops include Historic Garden Basin to see ‘Nucky’ Thompson’s and Al Capone’s old rum runner homes, the old Dennis Hotel (now Bally’s Wild West Casino), Haddon Hall (now Resorts Casino) and Nucky’s former residence, The Ritz. Visitors can walk, cycle or be pushed – in a ‘rolling


chair’ – along the boardwalk, perhaps stopping off for some of the city’s famous saltwater taffy. They shouldn’t miss the nightly free 3D light and sound show, projected onto Boardwalk Hall. “Atlantic City is often described as an East Coast
