 British Cleaning Council Looking back at an eventful and successful 2013

By Doug Cooke, chairman, British Cleaning Council.

This year has been one of new beginnings and activity for the British Cleaning Council. I believe that the council has dealt admirably with the changes and main- tained its position as the leading voice of the cleaning industry, withmuch to look forward to in 2014. After the final Cleaning

Show at the Birmingham NEC, the BCCE board took the decision with Quartz Media to relocate to London’s ExCel Centre for 2015. Al- though theNEC had served us adequately in previous

years, a move to London will reinvigorate the event, at- tracting a wider range of visi- tors and exhibitors, acting as a gateway for international markets and providing a fan- tastic variety of entertainment options for networking. I for one amvery excited about this decision and amlooking forward to a revamped and busy industry event in a city that affords the cleaning in- dustry the status is deserves. We also revamped our web-

site - www.britshcleaning- council.org - from its dated format to an easy to navigate and slickWordpress-based site. It now allows users much easier navigation for BCC news, events and re- sources. The new digital presence came with a rein- vigorated Twitter account, leading to a dramatic in- crease in followers and am- plifying the voice of the industry further. In June we said our good-

byes to our long term general secretary, Andrew Large, who

had faithfully and success- fully served our industry as the voice of many industry or- ganisations. At a time of change and mergers for many trade associations, An- drew was headhunted by the British Poultry Council with an offer he couldn’t refuse. Steven Proudfoot, operations director of Asset Skills, took over as interim general sec- retary, and has done an ad- mirable job of managing the transition. The BCC has developed

policy frameworks to utilise the many and wide ranging industry experts that sit on its board. We have looked into a number of areas, including immigration, employment, regulation, social responsibil- ity and environmental issues, and have created focus groups who will update our stance and focus regularly. In the lead up to the general election in 2015, these policy groups will increase the in- dustry’s visibility and ensure that we have a coherent voice,

led by industry professionals, in the decisionmaking. We also held our 2013 an-

nual conference on ‘Future proofing the cleaning indus- try’ in November at the CBI Venue at Centrepoint, Lon- don. Delegates took away many new ideas and skills - including sessions on start- ups in the industry, vocal training, and the potential for the public sector to compete in the private arena. A big thank you to our sponsors Nilfisk, South Thames Col- lege, NSL Services, Asset Skills, Keep Britain Tidy, Reintec, and Cleaning& Maintenance Magazine. Our grants programme is

Profits from The Cleaning Show, co-owned by the BCC and Quartz Business Media, are poured back into the grants programme - another reason to support the showand its move to London for2015.

still very much alive and well. Our most recent award went to the Federation of Window Cleaners for a new health and safety standard to make compliance simpler and more practical. We have up- dated the guidance for our grants, and increased the maximumamount to £10,000. We look forward to more ap- plicants in 2014. All in all, a busy and suc-

cessful year for the British Cleaning Council. I have been honoured to have taken the role as chairman in this di- verse and dedicated organi- sation and wish the industry a happy Christmas holiday and prosperous New Year.
