PROJECT | 15 Focus, focus, focus
The current foodie fashion is for the use of wide apertures to blur the backgrounds and focus the picture on a specific point, but you still have to make sure that the key point of the shot is what’s in focus. A dedicated macro lens like the 60mm or the macro setting on your compact will get you there. Sometimes you might lose a detail because the depth of field is too shallow – so experiment to see what best suits what you’re shooting.
TOP TIPS to get you started
A different perspective
The classic angle to capture food from is eye- height, as if you were looking at your food while seated at a table, which normally equates to about a 45° perspective. However, don’t be afraid to try a new angle like getting up high and looking down on your plate from above – especially if you’ve found yourself a brilliant background. This kind of shot makes a great card.
