Ghosts These see-through animals are masters of disguise.


Freaky Fish Deep in the ocean, two green dots glow. T e dots are eyes. Yet they don’t seem to be attached to a body. T ey belong to a spookfish. T e spookfish has an adaptation.


T at’s a body part that helps an animal survive. Its adaptation is a see-through head. It uses its head like a window. Its eyes can see out of the top of its head.

Ghostly Frog A diff erent kind of ghostly animal lives in the rain forest. T ere, a bump on a leaf wriggles. It makes a loud “peep” sound. It’s a glass frog. T is animal is hard to see. T e


skin on its belly is clear. T e bright green of the leaf shines through it. T e frog seems invisible. T is adaptation helps the frog survive. Predators can’t find it.


Wandering Wings T ere’s another ghostly animal in the rain forest. It is the glasswing butterfl y. Its wings are clear. When it fl ies, its wings are hard to see. T is butterfl y sits on a fl ower. Now


T is fish has other adaptations,


too. Its dark gray body and clear head blend into the water. It can be hard to spot in the ocean. T e spookfish spots a jelly. It has


caught a small fish in tentacles. T e spookfish swims into the jelly’s stinging tentacles. T e stings don’t bother it. It snatches the fish away from the jelly and eats it.

the fl ower’s bright colors can be seen through its wings. No matter where it goes, this butterfl y blends in. It is a master of disguise. Monsters. Vampires. Ghosts. All


of these critters may look or act spooky. Yet each has an important adaptation. T ese adaptations help them hunt, hide, and live longer. T ese animals are survivors.
