Recipes . . . to live by By Tory Tedder Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers and

grandmothers out there. I hope your children are very nice to you on this day and bring you breakfast in bed—even if it is Fruit Loops with burnt toast. I made my mom a Mother's Day dinner one year.

I'm not sure I had done anything more than boil noodles before, but my third-grade self figured I was smart and could read a recipe as good as anyone. I got out the Gourmet Cookbook and made a list

of ingredients Mom needed to buy—but I wouldn't tell her what I was making! Well, Oklahoma grocery stores in the 1980s did not stock much of what was called for so from the other room—she couldn't be in the kitchen or the surprise would be ruined— she called out possible substitutions. I'd yell back, "What's reduction?" and "How do you caramelize?" and other terms or techniques I've never used since. Oh, my. She must have thought I was going to lose a limb if I didn't burn the kitchen down, or both. We had a delicious dinner of baked ham in

currant jelly, caramelized oranges, stuffed tomatoes and the richest, most delicious chocolate mousse— with maybe a tad too much brandy extract—with cigarillo cookies. I always had such big, grandiose plans that

tended to become more and more complicated as I worked through them—a quality that has stayed with me throughout my entire life— but, this couldn't fail because it was intended to make my mom happy, and after hours and hours (we ate very late) I think it did. Happy Mother's Day, Mom.

In honor of mothers and the recipes they pass on

from generation to generation, this month's feature is from Laura Means-Tysor of Moore. She shared her maternal grandmother's recipe for Delight Salad.
