Out and About Paul Nulty Lighting Design Adventure Bar London, UK

Paul Nulty Lighting Design (PNLD) is delighted to have provided an architectural lighting design for the Adventure Bar in Clapham High Street, London.

The Adventure Bar located in Clapham High Street is the fifth in a growing chain, where lighting plays a huge role in providing mood and ambience. Working with interior designers Finch Design, PNLD produced an incredible scheme to create a theatrical setting and make the space that bit more inviting.

In total, the lighting scheme costs just £6,500 including controls. The PNLD team worked hard to put together something creative and resourceful when specifying luminaires. Head of Practice, Paul Nulty, explains: "It was an ambitious budget so we had to think laterally and eventually sourced OEM components such as squirrel cages for the pendants from eBay, and we also used reclaimed luminaires – both of which helped us come in on budget." The project took just nine weeks in total to complete, with clusters of light bulbs providing key lighting features over the front area and along the panelled wall and banquette. These provide an excellent visual emphasis, attracting attention and hopefully bringing in new visitors to the bar. In order to encourage visitors to move

freely within the space, lighting level is gradually increased moving towards the back of the bar. PNLD achieved this by utilising a lighting control system that

enables the illuminance levels to be carefully balanced across the bar. The Adventure Bar brand is associated with a raw and edgy aesthetic, which was replicated through the use of GU10 birdie luminaires that were positioned on surface mounted, galvanised conduit, and both PNLD and the client are committed to swapping these to retrofit LED versions; "It's quite frustrating that technology hasn't quite caught up with the hype yet, despite trialing several different versions of retro-fit LED lamps, we simply couldn't find one that dimmed suitably," Nulty explains. Director of the Adventure Bar, Thomas Kidd, commented: "The lighting design successfully reflects and underlines the Adventure Bar brand and our offer. It's raw, honest and dramatic and we're really pleased to have been able to open on time and on budget without compromise." The finished space is an incredibly subtle but involved lighting scheme that perfectly suits the setting and the wider Adventure Bar brand.
