Sub-ambient reaction systems for crystallisation studies
Available in a choice of configurations, Asynt DrySyn SnowStorm systems provide controlled cooling for sub-ambient chemistry without the need for jacketed reaction vessels or ice baths. Operating with a suitable chiller / circulator, the systems give accurate, stable temperature control down to –50°C and up to +150°C making them perfect for crystallisation studies and screening
polymorphs. DrySyn SnowStorm One is designed to accommodate a single standard round-bottomed flask from 50ml to 1000ml. The SnowStorm Multi takes up to 3 round bottom flasks from 25ml to 100ml, or up to 39 vials in parallel. All SnowStorm units offer powerful agitation using a magnetic stirrer drive. Widely used for cooled reactions,
the traditional ice bath is limited to temperatures around 0ºC, requires constant attention and is subject to temperature fluctuations. By comparison, the stable controlled performance means that overnight runs can be performed with complete confidence.
Biowake is giving away electronic pipettes to all customers ordering filter or pipette tips. A single channel electronic pipette will be shipped when a customer orders over €500 of filter or pipette tips, whereas a multi-channel electronic pipette will be shipped with over €1000 of tips. The low retention tips are made from high quality virgin polypropylene, fit most popular brands of pipettors and are also available in low binding versions and DNase and RNase free.
Biowake was formed as a result of the
increasing pressure on customers to deliver the same high quality results, but with a constantly shrinking budget.
Biowake supplies an extensive range of high purity consumables including manual pipette tips as well as robotic tips, compatible with all popular brands of automation equipment. To complement the consumables, Biowake also offers manual and automated pipettes and liquid handlers, sample storage tools and traceability products.
The DrySyn Parallel Synthesis Kit from Asynt offers a low cost solution for chemists wishing to conduct simple synthetic reactions with temperature control and magnetic stirring in parallel, but without the complications of reflux or inerting.
Compatible with tubes and vials of varying diameters and from different
manufacturers, the kit is uniquely versatile without compromising performance. It can also be upgraded to a parallel reaction station using standard
round bottom flasks, by using the appropriate DrySyn MULTI inserts. In this configuration, facilities like reflux, gas control and stirring can also be added.
Dimethyl ether (DME) burns much cleaner than diesel oils, and is also proving to be an economic and effective alternative fuel or fuel additive for use with gas turbines as well as petrol and diesel powered engines. However, the seals used on diesel engine injector tips must be specified to resist degradation where an aggressive alternative fuel such as DME is being used. Several elastomers and even fluoroelastomers (FKM’s) have been evaluated but operating temperatures above 100°C have led to seal degradation resulting in reduced engine performance and reliability.
However, the operation of diesel engines powered by DME fuel for commercial passenger transportation with DuPont Kalrez 6375 O-ring seals has achieved and maintained reliable engine performance without

premature seal degradation. The broad chemical resistance of the Kalrez parts, coupled with their high temperature compatibility enabled a significant improvement in engine performance as well as considerably extending useful operating life.
