$1 billion better!

The opening of Cars Land and Buena Vista Street highlight an ongoing series of improvements since Disney California Adventure (DCA) debuted in 2001 as a second gate to the original Disneyland park in Anaheim. The last five years alone have witnessed $1.1 billion of investment – about the same amount that was spent creating the park in the first place. The renovation was needed as DCA, part of the Disneyland Resort, has suffered from weak attendance since opening in 2001. According to the Theme Index 2011, a total of 6.3 million people visited last year. Whilst that makes it one of the world’s 20 busiest parks, it’s way short of the figures achieved by the second, third and fourth gates (EPCOT, Disney Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom) at Walt Disney World in Florida – and almost 10 million less than the park it supports in California (Disneyland welcomed 16.1 guests in 2011).

Merchandising gold!

One of the biggest challenges in expanding the Disneyland Resort was always going to be securing space on this landlocked site in Greater Los Angeles. Disney found the 55- acres originally required for California Adventure by developing a former parking lot, and set about creating a park celebrating the American state’s pop culture. New additions added throughout the early to mid-90s included A Bug’s Land, Twilight Zone Tower of Terror and the dark ride Monsters Inc Mike & Sulley to the Rescue. Announcing the five-year renovation in 2007, Walt Disney Imagineering was invited to tweak the park’s theme, focusing on the California of the 1920s – when Walt himself arrived in the state. Major new attractions included the dark rides Toy Story Mania! (2008) and The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Undersea Adventure (2011), the multimedia spectacular World of Color (2010), and now Cars Land and Buena Vista Street. Industry observer will be watching those attendance figures with interest in the years to come.
