Discussing Test Data

Tom Harrison, Managing Director of MHA Lighting, discusses the importance of Independent Test Data in the adoption of Solid State Lighting Solutions.

There is no doubt that the switch to energy efficient lighting such as LEDs can really pay off. But when you do make the switch, how do you avoid the pitfalls that can unfortunately be associated with the LED lighting market? Professional LED manufacturers have been working hard to ensure their products are able to achieve the photometric performance of fluorescents and halogens, and to develop luminaires that are as

pleasant to look at as fluorescent fixtures. But the benefits of LED technology are completely

evidence and certification for each of these three elements.

dependent upon longevity in the fitting. Longevity in a LED light engine is completely reliant upon three crucial factors - the LED itself, thermal management of the junction temperature and the driver. Facilities Managers are entitled to ask LED manufacturers or suppliers to provide thorough documented

Responsible LED lighting suppliers will have independent test data for each of those factors as well as photometric data, CE marking and IP rating certification. Here at MHA Lighting, we

possess a unique technology that can not only provide energy savings of up to 80% on lighting costs but can also create better light quality and distribution than most traditional fluorescents. As a new company we quickly identified

that independent verification was essential in getting the product to market. As a result, we enlisted the services of the National Physics Laboratory (NPL), in Teddington, to provide photometric test data that would independently substantiate claims about the quantity and quality of light our products produce.

These improved measurements are essential if lighting manufacturers and lighting designers are to justify claims of efficiency and quality.

Responsible LED lighting suppliers will have independent test data and proper photometric evidence for the light distribution of each product, and we understood from the beginning the importance of measurement in the uptake of our lighting. The NPL independent data not only provides us with the credibility we need with potential customers, but also reassures us that the data we have for our products is correct.

Companies that enlist in the services of the NPL will find that clients are much more likely to adopt lighting solutions because of confidence in photometric data.
