meetings, said PLTS President Phyl- lis B. Anderson. “Our institutions are investing in the research needed to make a decision—research on donor atti- tudes, the financial state of both schools and deferred maintenance at PLTS,” she said. “Something like seven of our 11 [supporting] synods overwhelmingly passed motions at their assemblies that encourage us to go forward in this [exploratory] process.”

All of this is the kind of col- laboration called for in “Renewing the Seedbed,” a 2010 ELCA report on theological education. Jonathan Strandjord, ELCA program direc- tor for seminaries, explained that the word “seminary” means “seed- bed” (a place to nurture the seeds of young plants). We can expect to see more of seminaries and colleges or universi- ties “taking long-standing relation- ships to a new level,” Strandjord said. “Colleges have a renewed excitement about the Lutheran doc- trine of vocation and seminaries are expanding on their commitment to theological education for all Chris- tians in their many callings.” 

• Luther Seminary and Augsburg College, Minneapolis, offer dual degrees (a Master of Arts in Theology and a Master of Social Work), as well as a mini-Master of Business Admin- istration course for pastors and other church leaders. • For future ELCA clergy who declare early, interlocking scholar- ship programs are available from either Carthage College, Kenosha, Wis., and the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, or Wagner College, Staten Island, N.Y., and the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. Such programs help nurture and support people of color or whose primary language is other than English with mentoring and service- repayable grants. • Located across the street from each other in Columbus, Ohio, Trinity Lutheran Seminary and Capital Uni-

versity offer dual degrees, such as a Master of Nursing/Master of Theo- logical Studies and a Juris Doctor/ Master of Theological Studies. • The ELCA also has two seminary extension centers. The Lutheran Seminary Program in the Southwest, an extension of Wartburg Seminary and LSTC, is on the campus of the (Episcopal) Seminary of the South- west. It prepares people for ministry in Latino communities through Theo- logical Education for Emerging Min- istries, an alternate route to ordained ministry.

The Lutheran Theological Center

in Atlanta is on the campus of the Interdenominational Theological Center, a consortium of six histori- cally African-American denomina- tions. It prepares seminarians, clergy and laity for ministry in urban and ethnic-specific contexts. 
