CARTHAGE CONGRATULATES

Dr. James Unglaube recipient of the Carthage Flame award.

Jim Unglaube has given his life to Lutheran higher education, and focused his love on Carthage.

A Milwaukee native, Jim attended Carthage at its Illinois campus, and completed his Ph.D. in chemistry at the University of Iowa. He became an outstanding professor, and then, one of the youngest college deans in the country—all before his thirtieth birthday. In 1977, he joined the higher education staff at the national office of the Lutheran Church in America. He nurtured relationships between Lutheran colleges and the Church, traveling throughout the world and visiting more than sixty countries. A decade later, he became the Director of Colleges and Universities for the ELCA.

Jim returned to his alma mater in 1998, leading the college relations team that was instrumental in funding the most exciting faculty and campus development in the history of the College. His professional accomplishments and personal generosity have created brighter futures for thousands of Carthage students, earning him nationwide respect as a servant leader of the highest caliber. Now semi-retired, he lives in Minneapolis with his wife, LaRue, also a Carthage graduate.

The Carthage Flame is the most prestigious honor bestowed by the College. It recognizes outstanding service to both the College and the community. We honor the example Jim Unglaube is setting for successive generations of Carthage students.
