aints... June and Bill Diehl

“What is love?” Bill once asked that question of a prospective Carthage president in a formal interview. Bill had the element of surprise going for him, but he did believe that even noble enterprises like educating the young are best pursued with love. After all, as the son of a former president, Bill had seen the work from the inside.

After seminary, Bill served parishes in Illinois, Michigan, and Florida, and institutions such as Carthage and Michigan Lutheran Camp. June graduated from Carthage in 1941, taught school, raised a family, and supported her husband in his work. Together, they made life better for others.

A teacher and a pastor normally are not people of great material wealth. That was true of June and Bill. But they gave generously of what they had and endowed a scholarship for students planning careers in education or the ministry. And they supported his parents’ scholarship, which helps children of clergy attend Carthage. Truly, they lived richly.

Planned and estate gifts to Carthage, such as will inclusions, charitable gift annuities and trusts, and life insurance, provide ideal opportunities to benefit you and the College.
