At second annual Global Technology Conference (GTC 2011), GLOBALFOUNDRIES announced the winners of its new “Leading in Innovation” awards. Presented to customers who have demonstrated innovative solutions on products ranging from 0.35um non-volatile memories to leading-edge 28nm smartphone processors, the awards showcase the company’s collaborative approach to enabling chip designers to deliver a superior end-user expe- rience. The 2011 “Leading in Innovation” award winners are:


Innovative Mobile Solutions


Broadcom Corporation, for its mobile connectivity combo chips, currently manufactured on GLOBAL- FOUNDRIES’ 65nm low power technology.


Inside Secure, for its MicroRead near-field com- munication (NFC) solution, manufactured on GLO- BALFOUNDRIES’ 0.35µm-EEPROM technology, and planned for production on 0.13µm-EEPROM. Rambus, for its high-speed low-power next-genera- tion memory technologies developed on GLOBAL- FOUNDRIES’ 28nm-SLP technology.


STMicroelectronics, for its technology development used in ST-Ericsson’s leading edge Nova A9600 smartphone application processor, planned for pro- duction on GLOBALFOUNDRIES’ 28nm-SLP techno- logy.

oodfellow, an international supplier of metals and materials for research and product design,


has announced the availability of a magnetic shape memory alloy (nickel-manganese- gallium) that responds to magnetic fields as well as to tempera- ture, allowing for the conversion of magnetic field energy into kinetic energy. Although it is similar in action to piezo-based or magnetostrictive materials, this patented NiMnGa single crystal produces much higher strain outputs (typically 10 to 100 times more) and higher energy density (8 to 50 times higher). This innovative alloy represents a significant alternative to conventional actuators, especially for applications that require a large strain and light weight, such as in aerospace, automotive and medical components.

eadwaters‘ (NYSE: HW) third quarter 2011 revenue of $172.3 million decreased 10% com-


pared to $192.2 million for the quarter ended June 30, 2010. Adjusted EBITDA in the June 2011 quarter was $28.1 million, declining from $36.2 million in the June 2010 quarter. Gross profit decreased from $55.0 million in the June 2010 quarter to $40.5 mil- lion in the June 2011 quarter, and operating income in the June 2011 quarter was $8.9 million, compared to $13.4 million in the June 2010 quarter.
