Ni Hao Kitty!
Sanrio, owner of the Hello Kitty brand, is to license a theme park in China based around the kitsch cat character. Selected to develop the masterplan and concept design for the project in Anji (Zheijiang province) is the Hettema Group.
Scheduled to open in 2014, the park will be located less than a two-hour drive from Shanghai, accessed via a new freeway. Despite Hello Kitty’s child-friendly colours, the project will feature a natural theme exploiting the bamboo groves and scenic relaxation areas in the Longwang Mountain Nature Reserve. “Hello Kitty Park will be sensitively integrated into the landscape,” highlights Phil Hettema, president, creative executive and founder of the Hettema Group. “Ecological themes such as sustainability, recycling, and alternative energy sources will be featured throughout the park’s attractions.”
Gary Goddard back in the park!
Now that the $1.9 billion (€1.3bn) Galaxy Macau resort casino has opened (it debuted on May 15), Gary Goddard – pictured on site below – can get back to working on theme park projects.
Gary Goddard Entertainment (GGE) developed the design of this latest casino in Asia’s renowned gambling haven. Standing next to The Venetian Macao, Galaxy’s exterior adopts the familiar casino resort profile, but is enhanced by south east Asian theming. GGE’s return to the theme park sector is highlighted by its involvement in the Lotte Group’s plans to develop a new phase of Lotte World in Seoul, South Korea, where Goddard’s company will provide the schematic design. Other new planned projects include Chinese developments in Qingdao and Fuzhou, plus a massive new development in Indonesia, as well as a new theme park in Armenia.

The elements of fire, water, wood, metal and earth will create sub-themes for each of five areas, which will together form a flower petal design. Also included will be a festival area to celebrate and handle increased attendance at peak periods such as Chinese New Year.
Sanrio already operates two theme parks in Japan, Sanrio Puroland in Tokyo and Sanrio Harmonyland in Oita. Hello Kitty Park, the working title of the Chinese project, will be the company’s first outdoor park operation outside of its home country. The developer is Zhejiang New Insight Leisure Tourism Development Co, which will license the Hello Kitty characters and related intellectual property from Saniro. Groundbreaking is expected this coming November.
The Hettema Group, which specialises in creative design, production and architecture for theme parks and other attractions, recently created the award- winning, multimedia experience Beyond All Boundaries for the National World War II Museum in

Seay addresses Colombian parks conference
Premier Rides’ president and chairman of the ASTM F24 committee, Jim Seay delivered a keynote speech on ride safety standards and the importance of training at the 2011 Latin American Amusement Expo recently in Colombia. Staged by the Colombian amusement association ACOLAP, the event was held in Bogotá from April 6 to 8. Seay’s keynote presentation focused on the accomplishments the industry has shared over the last decade with the overall reduction of incidents, but also highlighted concerns raised by recent international incidents.
Seay discussed the need for countries to both adopt current global safety standards like ASTM F24 and to establish effective training and certification programmes. Statistics from the United States were presented that showed a downward trend in incidences and Seay credited both IAAPA and safety education groups like AIMS for their dedicated efforts on safety through education, outreach and notification. “The Latin American amusement industry is growing rapidly with many new high quality facilities,” noted ACOLAP general manager Julio Vanegas Carruseles. “We look forward to working with our global partners so that we can continue to offer our guests safe, clean fun.”
