Show Us Your Best

In the June 2008 issue of Green Builder, I used this column to announce to our readers that we were excited to initiate what we hoped would become an annual awards program recognizing our choices for Green Builder Home of the Year. The program was an instant success and in the three years we have held the competition, we have received stellar entries from virtually every state in the country.

Back in April of this year, we issued an electronic Call for Entries, inviting our readers to enter the 2011 Green Home of the Year Award Program. We followed up with an ad in both the print and digital versions of the May 2011 issue of Green Builder (pages 60 and 61).

In case you missed either or both of those notices, or the other reminders we have included in our electronic communications, I want to personally invite you to take a look at the entry application and consider entering your special project this year. Entries must be received no later than July 25, 2011, so you still have enough time to put together an entry packet that no judge could possibly overlook; but the clock is ticking, so it’s a good idea to get started if you haven’t already.

As before, we are keeping the application process simple. And, as in years past, the projects garnering awards in this year’s competition will be featured in our December issue. We have even taken steps to make sure the program is as affordable as possible, keeping the fee for regular entries at just $99 and offering a rate of only $79 dollars for additional entries.

But there is a fresh feature–one we’re really excited about. This year, we have created a new category we are calling “Mainstream Green,” and we hope to have a recipient of this award from every one of the 50 States. We are looking for projects that demonstrate exceptional value and performance in typical American homes. We’re anxious to show everyone that builders all over the country are delivering affordable excellence to buyers in their markets.

From a recognition standpoint, we think this is a great opportunity to identify those builders who may not opt to install all the bells and whistles on every project, choosing instead to concentrate on exemplary quality and performance in the building envelope and the basic building systems to reach the average buyer. Additionally, the odds of your project being selected for an award go up considerably when it only has to compete with others in your own state.

There are a couple of special requirements in the new Mainstream Green category. Entries will be considered if they have received a HERS rating of 50 or better, and they must be comprised of less than 3,500 square feet, or 800 square feet per occupant, conditioned space. In the spirit of access for all, we have set the entry fee for Mainstream Green projects at $69.

All the information you need is in the entry packet. To get one, simply contact Heather Wallace: (heather@greenbuildermag.com). The deadline is July 25th. We look forward to learning about your favorite project.
