Higher education

William J. Craft, dean of Luther Col- lege, Decorah, Iowa, and vice presi- dent for academic affairs, was named the 11th president of Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn. Search committee chair Randy Boushek called Craft “an excellent fit,” say- ing he “brings a wealth of experi- ence and a passion for the liberal arts and Lutheran higher education.” At Luther, Craft helped revise the curric- ulum and assisted with the design and implementation of strategic planning.

“As happy as a clam” wouldn’t seem to fit in the Canadian and U.S. upper eastern coasts, where disease has endangered the wild and captive clam populations. The disease, Quahog parasitic unknown (QPX), could be stopped by new research from a team of scientists, including Gettysburg

(Pa.) College first-year student Laura Gambino, a biochemistry and molec- ular biology major. Working with researcher Bassem Allam at Stony Brook [N.Y.] University, Gambino was co-author of a study in the Jour- nal of Invertebrate Pathology.

Students’ sound investments are ben- efiting Roanoke College, Salem, Va. The Student Managed Fund class invests a portion of the school’s endowment. Begun in 2004 with $500,000, the fund is now worth more than $685,000. Roanoke profes- sor Larry Lynch serves as a faculty adviser, but a student manager runs the class. Students report on the stocks they’re monitoring and discuss stock performance and changes they’d like to make in investment strategy.

The student government at Califor- nia Lutheran University, Thousand Oaks, voted Feb. 28 to remove from its constitution the phrase “to further Christian growth,” replacing it with “to inspire the maturity of faith and reason in an environment of Lutheran tradition.” Senior Jesse Knutson, a Lutheran, called for a panel to review the change and remove the stu- dent body president, an atheist who founded the Secular Student Alliance on campus. The panel declined, but the proposal went to students, who must approve constitutional changes by a two-thirds majority. In a March op-ed piece on the Ventura County Star’s website and the CLU Facebook page, CLU President Chris Kimball wrote that such a change would not affect the school’s constitution, mis- sion statement or identity statement, which reads: “Rooted in the Lutheran tradition of Christian faith, the uni- versity encourages critical inquiry into matters of both faith and reason.” CLU’s Lutheran identity “defines who we are as an academic and social community,” he wrote.
