Emilio Butragueño (left) won many trophies as a striker for Real Madrid CF at the legendary Santiago Bernabéu (above and below)

most recognisable stadiums in the game hosting the final of the best club competition in the world. Everything about that scenario is perfect.

How did you prepare for big games?

I always wanted to be alone. I basically didn’t exist to my family before big games and they knew not to call me. I didn’t talk to anyone. I was totally focused on the game and nothing else.

Has the stadium changed since you played here?

Yes, a lot. We have invested a lot of money to update the Santiago Bernabéu’s facilities and it’s now one of the most comfortable places to watch football in the world.

What advice would you give to this year’s finalists?

These players have so much experience and have played many great games this season already, especially Internazionale whose semi-final second leg against Barcelona – at another fabulous stadium – was extremely tense. They’re all used to games like these. It’s a privilege for them because it’s one of the biggest games of their lives.

What’s different about being in a European final?

All footballers have big games during a normal season, and games that define their career, but are there any as big as the Champions League final? This will be the match of these players’ lives. Only a few players ever have this opportunity.

Where will you be watching the final?

As UEFA’s ambassador for the final I’ll be in the stadium, but I don’t know where. I’ll also be there as a Real Madrid director so hopefully I’ll have a ticket!
