The Standard Periodical Directory is composed of eight parts:

1. Preface

2. Table of Contents – An alphabetical listing of subject classifications into which periodicals have been placed, the number of entries (including cross-references) in each classification and the page number on which each classification begins.

3. Instructions for Use of the Directory

4. Cross Index to Subjects – A key word index and guide to related categories.

5. Periodical Listings – The principal section of the book, arranged alphabetically by classification and title.

6. Online Index – Lists publications that are available online, with URLs and online services if applicable.

7. Title Change Index – An alphabetical list of all former titles of periodical entries followed by current titles.

8. Title/ISSN Index – An alphabetical list of all periodical entries by title, with ISSNs where applicable.

How to Locate Periodicals

Every periodical is classified by one of the 263 subject categories appearing in the Table of Contents. When searching for periodicals covering a specific subject, first consult the Table of Contents to determine whether the subject of interest corresponds with one of the classifications. If so, turn to the appropriate category in the Periodical Listings section. Periodicals are listed alphabetically within each category.

If a particular subject cannot be located in the Table of Contents, check the Cross Index to Subjects for possible related topics under which the periodicals might be listed.

When searching for a specific title, turn first to the Title Index/ISSN, which is sorted alphabetically by title. If a title is not found in alphabetical order in the index, try searching by acronyms (see below).

Filing Rules

Within each subject category, periodicals are listed alphabetically by the first significant word in the title. Articles and prepositions appearing at the beginning of a title or in the body of a title are disregarded when determining filing sequence except in the case of foreign titles, where articles such as “le,” “die,” and “el,” determine filing sequence.

Acronyms, formed from the first letters of titles or of sponsoring organizations, such as U.N., N.Y.C., ALA, are grouped alphabetically at the beginning of the appropriate letter of the alphabet. Titles beginning with “U.S.” file as if they began with “United States.”
