what inspired you to make this album?
The case of “I Can Cut & Sew” is one story I didn’t know I was going to tell until I
saw the dress patterned paper from Studio Calico. Right then, I knew I wanted to
document all the pretty little things I had made in years past.
How did you create your album?
These photos were taken back in the day, so the quality was mediocre at best. I found
myself cutting out the dress from each photo and placing it on the base of each
album page, almost as an embellishment. I decided to keep the overall design simple
by only selecting a few items to work with and then building from there with paper
cutting, stamping, and punching. To unify the album, I repeated the same techniques
on each page. It took me just over a (rather interrupted) week to complete.
why did you make this album?
I used to sew dresses for friends’ babies when they were born, but it was only
something I could give out of love, not something I could make to sell. I don’t sew
clothes anymore, and all I have are photos of the experience, so it’s nice to have a
memento of a hobby that was important to me at one time in my life.
what does this album mean to you?
At this point, my passion for paper and paint has won over my drive to sew, but
looking back at these photos I’m reminded of a fun, experimental time in children’s
fashion that I loved being a part of. I will never forget the joy I shared in creating these
little sewn treasures. Gifts from the heart are worth more than anything you can buy at
the store, and preserving that idea and those memories for inspiration and motivation
later is worth more than any self-help book!
