cal mastectomy. I gently kissed her on
the cheek and said, “I love you, Mom.
Rest well, and I’ll see you early in the
morning.”
As I made my way from the hospital
room and down the long corridor, my
mind wandered over the events of the
past week. I recalled the doctor’s piercing
words: “The tumor is malignant.” I
thought, Can this really be happening
again? Three years earlier I had watched
as my dad suffered the pain of a malig-
nant tumor. I remembered the endless
hours we spent in the hospital and my
feelings of helplessness.
Approaching the large front doors of
the hospital, I found myself literally run-
ning through the parking lot. I had tried
to be so brave in Mom’s presence, but
now the tears were flowing freely.
I unlocked the door of the car, leaned
over the steering wheel, and began to
scream, “God! Where are You?” It was at
that moment, in my captivating darkness,
that I felt a divine presence. The Holy
Spirit began to sing through me. Before
long, I recognized the song as God’s
sweet night song—written, orchestrated,
and directed especially for me. The black-
ness of the night could not silence His
song. I sang this divine melody over and
over, and I experienced the joy of His
sweet communion.
Early the next morning I entered
Mom’s hospital room. The attending
physician was there. “Good news!” He
said. “The surgery was the cure. The
tumor has not spread, and there will be
no need for any follow-up treatments.”
Mom and I began to cry and laugh simul-
