“homey” one. “Tis trip brought me in contact with my Alaskan/Northwest native American ancestry, with old village sites and fishing grounds. And up to the day I crossed out of Alaska, a hummingbird visited me daily. I knew it was my father’s spirit that had come to me as an all-white hummingbird,” Skyriver remembers. “It felt natural to paddle toward Lopez, toward my friends and family, toward my home. When I got into Lopez’s Odlin Bay, so many people were there on the shore singing and welcoming me home—for a time I stopped paddling and just cried.”
