City Market on Saturday brought many Charlottesville citizens
to the Downtown Mall area for the first time in their lives in
some cases,” she said. “The market had an enormous effect on
making the downtown area viable and popular.”
“We were enchanted with the idea of owning, renovating, living and working in a historic warehouse in downtown Charlottesville where
we could, perhaps, attract other families and small businesses to an urban downtown Charlottesville.”
In addition, Roulhac and friends—including Jean Hiatt
and author and preservationist Toni Roades—founded
Preservation Piedmont, which they saw as a vehicle to
enhance preservation downtown.
Many others shared Roulhac’s vision. As Alana Woerpel said:
“It seemed like the obvious direction for downtown to go.”
Lisa Murphy added that the
city was very supportive and
as flexible as they could be
in encouraging development
of the area. “Everyone in
the district is proud to have
been a part of bringing a
growing community into
empty warehouses while
maintaining a great respect
for their history and those
who came before.”
