Bail Bonds
Car insurance from Allstate and several other insurers will pay your bail bond if you get into trouble.

New Locks
If someone breaks into your house or steals your keys, many homeowners policies will pay to have new locks put in.

False Fire Alarms
If you live in a community where a false alarm results in a charge from the local fire department, Chubb is one of several insurers who’ll reimburse you for the fee (typically $250 to $500).

Injured Guests
Most homeowners insurers will pay the medical bills of anyone who is hurt at your home whether they trip and fall or are bit by the family dog. However, many homeowners insurers ban coverage for specific dog breeds they view as dangerous, such as pit bulls. And many insurers will cover your dog’s first bite, then not offer the coverage again.

Theft of Camera on Vacation
Most homeowners insurers would cover you if your camera was stolen while on vacation.

Identify Theft
MetLife provides identity theft coverage with its car insurance policies, but many insurers offer the coverage through their standard homeowners policies. Other companies, such as State Farm, offer that coverage as a stand-alone policy.

Dorm Theft
Homeowners insurance also can extend to your child’s dorm room, and would cover the theft of a laptop computer or other electronic device.

Know Your Policy

• Policies can vary from company to company, so check with your insurance agent or company to see what claims would be covered.

• If you get health insurance through your employer, check with your human resources department to see what health perks you might already qualify for.

• Be aware of what your policy limits are. Many policies cap payment for certain claims.

• Know your deductible. If your deductible — the amount of money you have to spend out of pocket before the insurance kicks in — is larger than the claim, it might not make sense to file the claim.
