Living With Big Cats Can humans and big cats live together in peace? Many people think they can. Wildlife conservationists in some


areas pay farmers for lost livestock. Farmers then agree not to kill big cats. To keep their livestock safe, farmers build pens of wood and wire fencing. In many countries, wild animals are


kept in reserves. Tese large areas of land keep animals safe from hunters.


More Solutions In Central and South America, conservationists are trying to connect pieces of jaguar habitat. Clear paths from place to place provide areas for the big cat to roam away from people.

In Southeast Asia, scientists have


found areas of healthy tiger habitat. Tere is enough wild land for up to 20,000 tigers. If the tigers can be protected, their numbers might increase. In Africa and Asia, photo safaris


may help big cats, too. Travelers pay to see big cats up close. Te money from tourists helps local people and makes the big cats worth protecting.


Nine Lives In 2009, the National Geographic Society launched the Big Cats Initiative. It supports scientists working to save big cats in the wild.
