Manatees have very small brains. The ratio of their brains to their body size is the lowest of any mammal.


Manatees see well underwater in both dim and bright light.


Manatees have whiskers. Like cats and dogs, stiff hairs around their noses and mouths relay information to their brains.


Manatees breathe air every three to five minutes. When they take a breath, 90 percent of the air in their lungs is replaced (humans replace about 10 percent).
