TECH FRONT The Latest Research and Development News in Manufacturing and Technology

The skinny on the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation

WHO: THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION devised the initiative to spur development of new manufacturing technologies. Each member institute includes companies and universities—to foster collaboration between the corporate world and academia. As of April, eight institutes had been established, with one more to be set up.

The one still in development will concern itself with advanced sensors and process controls. The Obama administration also is seeking proposals for two more institutes that

don’t cover technologies assigned to the fi rst nine. Obama envisions as many as 45 institutes over a decade. (Edited by Senior Editor Bill Koenig from information provided by the institutes and the US Department of Commerce.)

WHAT: AMERICA’S FLEXI- BLE HYBRID ELECTRONICS MANUFACTURING INNOVA- TION INSTITUTE is develop- ing fl exible hybrid electron- ics, enabling the integration of thin silicon electronic devices, sensing elements, communications and power on non-traditional fl ex- ible substrates. NextFlex in February announced its 30 founding members, includ- ing Acellent Technologies, American Semiconductor, Brewer Science, Boeing, Custom Electronics, East- man Chemical, E Ink, Jabil, Molex, ON Semiconductor, Raytheon, SI2 Technologies, SRI International, STI Elec-

tronics and Uniqarta. WHEN OPENED:

WHAT: THE DIGITAL MAN- UFACTURING AND DESIGN INNOVATION INSTITUTE is working to propel for- ward the fi eld of American digital manufacturing and design. DMDII’s 196 mem- bers include Caterpillar, GE, Lockheed Martin, Microsoft, Procter & Gamble, Rolls- Royce, Siemens and Boe- ing. DMDII has issued six national contract research awards, including funding to test and aid compliance with the nation’s cyberse- curity standards for digital manufacturing, the institute

said in February. WHEN OPENED:

February 2014 WHERE: Chicago

WHAT: LIGHTWEIGHT IN- NOVATIONS FOR TOMOR- ROW is assigned to de- velop new, lighter weight materials. LIFT partners include Alcoa, Boeing, GE, Ohio State University and the University of Michigan. LIFT has started a tech- nology project focused on predicting the perfor- mance of aluminum lithium materials for the next generation of aircraft en- gines and other aerospace applications. LIFT also works with the Institute for Advanced Composites

Manufacturing Innovation. WHEN OPENED:

February 2014 WHERE: Detroit

WHAT: THE INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED COMPOS- ITES MANUFACTURING INNOVATION is assigned to deliver a public-private partnership to increase do- mestic production capacity, grow manufacturing and create jobs across the US composite industry. IACMI’s 149 members include 3M, Airbus, BASF, Boeing, Com- posites One, Dow Chemi- cal, Ford, GE, Honda, JEC Americas, Lockheed Martin and Volkswagen. The insti- tute is organized around fi ve focus areas: automo- tive, pressure vessels, wind, process engineering and

design engineering. WHEN OPENED:
