Construction. After a little more than 10 years of experience, he started his own business—a steel framing and drywall company in Hack- ensack, N.J. A decade later, he opted to sell the company and move to North Carolina to provide a better life for his young family, and for the weather.

In 1995, Edward and his wife Janeth, started American Craftsmen Inc. (ACI) in Raleigh. The family-owned-and-operated business is best known for providing cold-rolled steel framing gypsum board assemblies and stucco systems.

American Craftsmen’s team of framers have constructed schools, universities, athletic facil- ities, office buildings, retail centers, restaurants and an airport for clients primarily in North Carolina. The projects range in scope and scale. One example includes the installation of metal stud framing and drywall in a 387,000-square- foot Honda Jet R&D Facility in Greensboro for the Honda Aircraft Co.

With several decades of experience, Rubio is now focused on research and development of lightweight steel and concrete composite building systems.

NOT YOUR ORDINARY PRECAST PANELS

Rubio’s vision and passion for safe family living has provided the industry with a remarkable resource. He has created the world’s most lightweight, high strength-to-weight ratio, en- ergy-efficient, ASTM E119-12 3-hour fire-rated composite

concrete precast panel. Rubio’s

proprietary concrete composite building system was awarded a U.S. Patent in 2010.

Soon after, Rubio sent the panels to North Caro- lina State University’s Constructed Facilities

Laboratory (CFL) for industrial structural test- ing. CFL performed a series of assessments and found that the panels met and exceeded the national and international building codes for structural load-bearing wall systems. The panels withstood 8,000 pounds per square inch, with load-bearing capabilities starting at 1.3 tons per linear foot.

Rubio says, “In a tornado or hurricane, this

prefabricated concrete steel composite system acts like a bunker—and it is lightweight when compared to conventional concrete structures. ACI Smart Wall panels are strong like precast, however flexural and lightweight at 25 pounds per square foot.”

Additionally, ACI Smart Wall precast panels have a high thermal insulation value of R50+ (net zero structures). Its proprietary dense design mix is made with inorganic materials that starve mold growth on structures, therefore eliminating mold; it is impervious to moisture and also water-resistant.

In April 2015, ACI’s precast composite endured a three-hour fire endurance test per ASTM E119-12 Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests

ACI Smart Wall systems installed at Hilton Garden Inn in Durham, NC.
