A YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR T

odd Sachse grew up in the metropolitan Detroit neighborhood of Birmingham. His parents reinforced the value of hard work from an early age, so when his

older brother went to college, a 16-year-old Todd inherited his brother’s window washing business.

Sachse recalls, “I would clean and squeegee storefront windows along Woodward Avenue and in the suburbs. I worked hard, focused on quality and returned regularly to build repeat business.”

The business expanded to include house cleaning and continued to grow even while he attended college at the University of Michigan. By the time he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Anthropology and Zoology in 1985 with a focus on pre-med and acceptance into medical school, he had two offices with 50 employees to wash win- dows and 30 employees to clean houses.

“I had been accepted into medical school but changed my mind and decided to focus on my companies instead,” he recalls. “I started buying student rental properties in Ann Arbor in 1987, and served as the property manager.”

FUN AND A FOUND PASSION

His initial jump into the construction market was more about opportunity than a grand desire to build.

“In 1989, at the age of 26, a friend asked me to build a 100-unit apartment complex in Ann Arbor, but I had absolutely no experience in that type of work,” Sachse says. “So, I spent a year on development work for the project, then put in 14 months on the jobsite as an assistant to a superintendent—even though he worked for me. It was fun and I loved it.”

In 1990, he sold his window washing and clean- ing business, rented a 10x10 office and opened Sachse Construction. He was awarded his first job in December 1991 to build out Café Jardin at Somerset Mall.

He’s also a partner in Broder & Sachse Real Estate Services, handling property development and management; Stuart Mechanical, overseeing heating and cooling work; Brewster Maintenance, doing general maintenance and repair; Zolman Restoration, managing disaster restoration and recovery; and Morrey’s Contracting, supervising finish carpentry throughout the country, with his partner Richard Broder.

Today, Sachse Construction is licensed in 50 states, Canada, and Puerto Rico, with multiple Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) accredited professionals. Clients include retailers and restaurants, major corporations, developers, owners, hotel chains, medical cen- ters, and universities.
