“I had to read it to believe it. Patients and family rarely thank us. Rock star? This could be motivating!”

—Pia Love, via Facebook (Nurse.com/Article/Next-Shift/Rock-Star)

InDecember, a Facebook post discussed an article about nurse-developed Smart Care apartments that allowseniors to age in place. Here’s how readers responded.

Love this idea. What a fabulous way to keep people in their homes and safe. If Medicare/Medicaid could subsidize cost, it would be cost effective, more so than nursing homes.

—Betty Tice Morro

This is a great concept. But is it affordable? People on fixed incomes would have a difficult time living in someof these places.

—Karen SpurlinWest

As a home health nurse, it’s a very good idea. It helps themmaintain some form of independence.

—Stephanie Grey

They have this in theNetherlands. —Rosa Perreira

In theory, it’s good. —Debbie Black I love this idea. —Richard Munson

NICU babies and breastmilk Regarding the article “Study: Nurses’ work environment affects rate of babies discharged from NICU on breast milk,” (Nurse.com/Article/NICU-Breastmilk), although higher education combined with improved work environment equals more babies discharged on breastmilk, I would add that so does an RN’s experience. In the ‘90s, I didn’t have a home computer; all of my research on breast-feeding came from articles I found myself. I wanted what was best for my unborn child. I searched for a lactation consultant, which was not a popular route to take in those days. I became an RN this year after more

than 27 years in healthcare. I have an associate’s degree. Although a BSN will allow me to write better, perhaps to develop reports as needed and to become a successful manager, I have a lifetime of experience that also will help create positive outcomes, especially in this situation.

—Vivian Delvalle, RN Weehawken, N.J.

Nursing and religion Regarding the article “American Muslim RNs reflect on challenges” (Nurse.com/ Article/Muslim-Nurses), why do we have to stamp everything and everyone with religion? Why can’t we see everyone as a

human being—someone’s mother, father, son, daughter, etc. We do not need to consider religion in order to showrespect. I have never looked at a person who is suffering from illness in terms of religion or color. Also, a nursing association should not have any religious affiliations.

—Anna Curichiyil, RN Bensalem, Pa.

Education tech tools To add to the list of tools in the article “On the movewithmHealth” (Nurse.com/ Article/mHealth), another use of smart phone and tablet apps is patient and family education. For instance, Phoenix Children’s Hospital has a series of free apps that facilitate conversations between families and their healthcare teams, so they always leave the office or hospital understanding what to do.

—Fran London, MS, RN Phoenix, Ariz.

Wound care clarification A bachelor’s degree is not required to become a wound care nurse and there are many different types of wound care nurses. To read the updated 2015 Nurse.comSpecial Edition aboutWound Care, visit Nurse.com/Digital.
