Advance Practice Nurse Pharmacology Advanced practice nurses have prescriptive authority in nearly all states, making it imperative that they are well informed about their prescriptive practices. This recently revised 25-contact hour pharmacology course will help APNs meet the ANCC requirement for recertifi cation. Written and rigorously peer reviewed by pharmacists and advanced practice nurses, this course features a wide range of medical conditions and the medications associated with them. Chapter topics include hypertension, diuretics, GI, critical care, sexually transmitted diseases, asthma, oncology, nonopioid analgesics, diabetes, weight loss, mental health con- ditions such as anxiety, bipolar disorder, depression and much more. The chapters highlight clinical uses, dosing, interactions and adverse effects for the common medications used in your practice. APN tips are featured throughout the chapters to help you in your prescribing practices. Nurse.com/CE/CE60185

Zika: The Pandemic Threat The fi rst travel-associated case of Zika virus was reported in the U.S. in early January, and to date a total of 52 cases have been reported. One case involves a person in Texas who became infected with the Zika virus after having sexual contact with an ill individual who returned from Venezuela. Microcephaly and Guil- lian-Barre syndrome have been linked to Zika virus, but this association requires further scientifi c investigation. It’s essential that front-line healthcare providers are knowledgeable about the signs and symptoms of Zika virus and are vigilant about obtaining travel histories from patients, especially in high-risk areas. They should also be familiar with CDC guidelines related to pregnant women and newborn infants exposed to Zika virus, possible sexual transmission and preven- tion strategies of mosquito-borne illnesses. Advance Directives: Conversations Matter Healthcare professionals have an important role in helping patients and families formulate advance directives. Despite intensive efforts, most Americans don’t have an advance directive and can face a life-threatening illness without a plan to guide their healthcare providers or relatives. End-of-life care experts stress the need for major changes in the approach to promoting ADs, including a focus on promoting ongoing dialogue between patients and healthcare providers. As patient advocates, clinicians are in a strong position to work with patients and other healthcare professionals to make these important changes occur. Nurse.com/CE/CE715
