Simple Solutions T.H. Culhane fi rst thought about energy use when he worked in villages in Borneo and Guatemala. He saw how the people used every part of their environment. T ey lived in a sustainable way. T is means that they lived a lifestyle that only uses natural resources that can be replaced. Culhane began traveling to jungles and

urban slums to study the way people lived. He wanted to understand what challenges they faced and see how they solved them.

He was inspired. “T ese people helped

me to rethink how people in cities could live sustainably, too,” Culhane says. Culhane believes that many energy

problems can be solved. “All of the solutions to urban problems are already available, just waiting for people to put them all together,” he says. One solution to developing and using sustainable energy involves natural recycling processes. And it led Culhane to invent something.
