Be a “Bridge Builder”
While going through some of my late father’s keepsakes, I came upon a poem called “The Bridge Builder” by Will Allen Dromgoole that was labeled “Harry’s favorite poem.” I knew the poem, but never realized it was so important to my dad—though I was not surprised. As a youth worker, camp director, and MSW, he had devoted much of his life to developing capable young people.
The poem, written a century ago, tells of an older man whose travels lead him to a chasm which he is skilled enough to cross. Once safely on the other side, however, he stops and constructs a bridge. When questioned about why he was spending his precious time building a bridge that he would never need to use, he replied that not far behind him a youth was traveling the same path, and…
This chasm that has been as naught to me To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be; He, too, must cross in the twilight dim; Good friend, I am building this bridge for him!
Leaving the world a better place, whether by building a bridge or leading a parenting education course, is a challenge that most of us who care about children and teens have happily accepted. That so many of the children we help are not our own children in a literal sense (they are certainly our children in the “takes a village” sense) makes our work that much more worthwhile…and ultimately satisfying.
Thank you for all the bridges you build,
