AND KNOW THE PLACE FOR THE FIRST TIME. —t.s. eliot

T 52 · LAND&PEOPLE · SPRING/SUMMER 2015

the earth crumbles beneath my fingers. I look down to see my weathered

boots slip on the loose rocks underfoot. True, the unsigned trail I followed up from the paved road had seemed sketchy from the outset. Just before it disappeared completely I noticed a scattering of droppings left behind by some four-legged creature better equipped for rough terrain. It wouldn’t be the first time I’d followed a deer path by mistake. As the ground gives way I slide down the slope in a rush, tearing a gash into my right thigh. A trickle of blood runs down my leg. I’m going to ruin my favorite hiking shorts, I think, and then—there must be an easier way to get to the Griffith Park Observatory!
