Who is a good candidate for varnish treatment?

• Young dental patients, ages 0 to 18, as part of an annual well-child exam

• Adults with the following caries risk(s): - Poor oral hygiene - Developmental or acquired enamel defects - Eating disorders - Drug or alcohol abuse - Active orthodontic treatment - Xerostomia

For adults in high risk populations, two or more applications of fl uoride varnish per year are an eff ective caries prevention measure.

Some patients dislike

the waxy residue that is left on the teeth when

fl uoride varnish is used. It will wear off the next time they eat.

Insurance might or might not cover the treatment for adults; patients must then pay out of pocket for the treatment.
