DIVERSITY CONTEST WINNERS EMPHASIZE IMPACT, SERVICE

The positive impact of lacrosse participation on minority youth can be profound. Moy-Lyn Chen, a senior at Hollywood Hills (Fla.) High School in Florida and a member of the varsity lacrosse team, highlighted that in her co-winning submission to the annual US Lacrosse Diversity and Inclusion Essay Contest. US Lacrosse announced in March that Chen and Scott Menoher, a coach at Jack Britt (N.C.) High School, had been selected as the winners. Chen fi rst began playing lacrosse as a freshman when lacrosse was introduced at her school. She is now one of fi ve fourth-year seniors who have helped to build the program, the infl uence of the sport on her now clear. “Lacrosse was the fi rst time in my life that I actually felt a part of something because I was around people just like me,” Chen wrote. “People who could fi nally say that lacrosse made them feel like they belonged to something bigger than themselves. This sport doesn’t restrict players by race or ethnicity; it creates opportunity for players all over the world.”
In her free time, Chen volunteers as an assistant with the lacrosse team at a local middle school. Menoher grew up playing lacrosse in Colorado, competed as a club player at Fort Lewis College, and began his coaching career in the state. As a member of the military who has been deployed 16 times since 9/11, he now takes great pride in working with players who are also members of military families.
“My greatest accomplishment has been working with the sons and daughters of soldiers and families who serve,” Menoher wrote. “They are a special breed and have earned a rightful place in my heart.” He dedicated his essay to those players and families As contest winners, Chen and Menoher will receive shooting shirts for their teams from Encore Brand, created by former pro star Johnny Christmas.
