Know Before You Grow

Before planting a tree, it is wise to consider what the mature height of the tree will be. Diff erent species of trees should be planted farther distances from power lines. Talk to your nursery, the county extension agent or PEC’s certifi ed arborists for suggestions on low-growing trees that can be planted near power lines. And, as always, make sure to call before you dig by dialing 811 to identify any underground utility lines. The diagram at right shows recommended distances and heights for trees and bushes near power lines.

Be sure and dig your hole at least 35 feet from all power lines to allow for the spread of the tree at its maturity. The small seedling you plant today could grow into a giant.
